Prestonwood Forest Utility District

Important Information for Customers

During 2009 you will notice major construction around one of the water plants located at the end of Camborne Lane. We will be replacing these facilities, changing the method of treating the water, and begin receiving surface water from the North Harris County Regional Water Authority (NHCRWA). Prestonwood Forest Utility District (PFUD) has the funds available to pay for all these projects through past MUD tax assessments.

The new water plant facilities will be located on one acre of land adjacent to the current facilities. We anticipate that most of the construction traffic will access the construction site via FM-249 and not from Camborne Lane. Last year a major water line was built along the south side of Cypresswood Drive that will supply surface water to this facility. We anticipate that the first deliveries will occur in the fourth quarter of this year.

You may have noticed on your monthly water bill a line designated NHCRWA. This is mandated by the State of Texas and NHCRWA in order to pay for the costs associated with the construction and delivery of water to the utility districts in northwest Harris County. NHCRWA sets this annual fee for all districts on October 1 of each year. In 2008 it was $0.99 per thousand gallons, and for 2009 it is $1.50 per thousand gallons. PFUD does not receive any of these funds.

Historically, all of PFUD water has been supplied by two wells located within the district boundaries. This water is treated with chlorine a standard method for ground water disinfection. Later this year in preparation for receiving surface water, PFUD will begin using chloramines, a disinfection method used extensively throughout the country, including the City of Houston. Chloramines can affect aquariums and individuals who use water for kidney dialysis or other health reasons. Typically, proper use of special filters or other simple precautions should be adequate. Customers who need to do so should be prepared to treat their water for chloramines by about September 1, 2009. For most customers, no treating or filtering will be required.

The purpose of these PFUD projects is to comply with state law and to ensure adequate supplies of water to our customers well into the future. If you have any questions about any of these subjects you may contact Water District Management or a member of the PFUD.
