Prestonwood Forest Utility District Information
Late in 2009, Prestonwood Forest Utility District will be converting to a disinfectant method that involves the use of chloramines.
Chloramines are a combination of chlorine and a small amount of ammonia. The primary type of Chloramines use in our systems will be mono-chloramine (NH2C1).
Chloramines typically allow maintenance of proper residual disinfectant levels in a distribution system for a much longer time than free chlorine.
Chloramines have a long history of effective use for disinfecting water in numerous cities throughout the US and Canada including the city of Houston.
There are no known or anticipated adverse health effects from drinking water properly disinfected with chloramines.
Chloraminated water is safe for bathing, drinking, cooking and most other daily uses.
Special care must be taken when using chloraminated water in (1) kidney dialysis treatment and (2) fish aquariums. Prior to using chloraminated water for either of these cases, you should consult with the appropriate qualified personnel.
Before making the change from chlorine to chloramines the Water District will notify each customer of the exact date that the change will occur.
